Bob Dylan’s most famous guitar is going up for auction
One of the most famous guitars in music history will soon be up for auction. Bob Dylan’s electric guitar from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival is known for the great controversy that was caused when the folk hero performed his set ‘plugged in’ instead of acoustic. It was discovered last year on an episode of PBS’s History Detectives that the 1964 sunburst Fender Stratocaster still exists and is currently owned by New Jersey resident Dawn Peterson. The sale will also include handwritten Dylan lyrics circa 1965. They were found in the guitar case and contain fragments that later appeared in “Just Like a Woman” and the Blonde on Blonde outtake “Medicine Sunday,” an early version of “Temporary Like Achilles.”
It’s unknown how much the guitar is worth. “History Detectives felt it was worth $500,000,” says Peterson. “I believe it’s probably worth more than that. I doubt we’ll sell it with any sort of reserve. The lyrics also estimated to be worth at least $50,000.”
