This is a photo of Charlie Chaplin in front of Federal Hall on Wall Street in 1918 (click image for a larger version). He is standing in front of the George Washington statue that commemorates the spot where Washington was sworn in as our first president.
I had the pleasure of seeing this picture in person at the Met on Saturday. It blew me away. I don’t know if it’s the fact that I’ve walked by that statue so many times, the celebrity of Chaplin, the time period, or the faces of the people in crowd, but I have to say this is one of my all time favorite photos.
